The added review site Metacritic gave PlayStation 4 version 80/100, Hardcore Gamer's Steve Hannley rated the game 4.5 / 5 and said, "It's raw, visceral, intense and has a lot of replay value thanks to over a hundred events and seamless online multiplayer." Giant Bomb's Jeff Gerstmann rated the game 3/5, praising the gameplay and soundtrack of the game, but criticizing the lack of players allowed in online multiplayer. Gerstmann also noted that the PC version was locked at 30 frames per second and stated that "it is particularly ridiculous," but still considers the PC version to be the best version. It builds on the legacy of the series but it also extends in significant new directions. It may cause some commotion, but if this is what Ghost Games can throw in its first release and the first next generation of Need for Speed, the future is bright for this franchise. The features create a non-experience. Reiner also called the game's graphics "incredibly beautiful" and supplemented the gameplay to make the game feel "silky smooth." Reiner gave the game a 9/10 and received less criticism. 

GamesRadar's Nick Pino also praised the graphics and controls, calling them "absolutely wonderful" and "handsome" respectively. Pino criticized the fit and damage of the car, but praised or to the world of videogames for feeling alive.

Eurogamer player Martin Robinson gave the game a 9/10 and rated it astisk. "He spoke well about the action game in general, the point system, the car's sound design, visuals, and layout. Robinson's main criticisms were the "disgusting" soundtrack, the inability to pause the game, the size of the world, and the vehicle's extraction system.
