Far Cry 4 is a first-person action-adventure game. Players take control of Ajay Ghale, an American of Keratian descent who seeks to scatter the ashes of his deceased mother in the fictional country of Kerat. Throughout the game, players can run, jump, and crouch, and they have the ability to use weapons including rifles, bows, sniper rifles, mines, throwing knives, bows, flamethrowers, and rocket launchers. The game allows players to take cover to avoid gunfights and perform melee eliminations from above or up close. Unlike previous installments in the series, Far Cry 4 gives players the ability to kick things and the ability to hide corpses from enemies.

The game world is divided into two halves: North and South Kerat. Players start in South Kyrat and are free to explore it almost instantly, but they can only unlock North Kyrat throughout the story. The map is gradually unlocked by freeing the steeples, freeing them from Pagan Min's influence and allowing the Golden Path to expand. These towers help players discover new areas and locate important new locations on the map.

The world is full of outposts controlled by Pagan Min, which players can penetrate. Four larger outposts or forts can also be found, with stronger defenses and more difficult enemy groups. If players manage to free these outposts, they will act as fast travel points, allowing quick navigation through the game world. Additional missions and missions are also available. There are several side missions that can be completed, including hostage rescue operations, bomb disposal missions, and hunting missions. The collected animal parts can be used to make new bags and belts.
