Laidlaw: “One of the key elements of the story behind the technology was the extent to which we thought we could develop strong, well-rounded characters and put them in dynamic, dramatic scenes. For a long time, the character and animation systems were very tough, and those of us closest to the story had to live with a high level of confidence that the technology would eventually reach the point where we could implement it. In fact, the scenes we were drawing.

"Writing for a Half-Life-style game is an ongoing collaborative effort that begins in the early stages of project development and doesn't really end until the game ends.
