The No Man's Sky games procedurally generated planets have their own unique shapes and different sentient aliens can participate. The player is in combat within the planetary system. Players in the game have advanced mining resources to operate and improve by purchasing equipment with credits which are earned by documenting animals and plants. The player assumes the role of a planetary explorer sample in the universe. They start on a planet near the galaxy crash and wear a survival suit with a jetpack.

The player assumes the role of an explorer in the game as a traveler in an unknown world. They start on a random planet with a crashed galactic spaceship and are equipped with an exoplanet jetpack, the "Multi-Tool" can be used to scan and gather resources for self-attacking and powers. The player can collect and fuel the ship and allow them to travel around the local planet system and space station. The game is open-ended and follows the guidance of an entity known as Atlas with the center of the galaxy.
