Fran escapes into the woods with Mr. Midnight, a black cat that Fran had previously gotten as a gift from her parents, after witnessing the horrifying and inexplicable death of her parents, who were discovered mutilated at their house.

Fran experiences shock after losing her parents in the jungle, and when she comes to, she is in Oswald Asylum, a cruel mental hospital for kids, and Mr. Midnight is nowhere to be found.

Fran chooses to get out of the mental hospital to go for her pet cat and return to her sole surviving relative, Aunt Grace, after having a dream about him.
